Larrakia Cultural Centre

“This centre carries our culture forward and helps create a strong future for our people,” - Larrakia Development Corporation Deputy Chair Chrissy Jenner.
SLD is proud to have supplied the Ljusdesign lighting system through our trusted reseller, bluebottle, for Larrakia Cultural Centre.

Located in Darwin’s Stokes Hill Whard waterfront, this new indigenous cultural centre designed by Rossi Architects in collaboration with Susan Dugdale and Associates, is a special space dedicated to the culture and history for the Larrakia people. Uniting stories, art, culture and rich knowledge led by the Traditional Owners of the Darwin/Garrmalang region, the Larrakia people. A unique feature of the Centre is its roofline, which takes the form of a sentinel ancestral bird, the tawny frogmouth, a symbol of protection for the country and its people.

The Lighting Solution
Expert lighting designer Benjamin Cisterne worked alongside exhibition and concept designers, Freeman Ryan to deliver an exceptional design solution for the Centre. The brief called for a solution capable of delivering exceptional precision, quality and consistency across a diverse, interactive and culturally significant collection.
Ljusdesign’s Arty Framer, Arty Zoom and Arty Accent spotlights were selected. All with Casambi control and local rotary dimming, these 10W spots are robust and make a powerful combination, able to handle any lighting requirement the Centre’s cultural team desires.

After more than two decades of planning, Larrakia Cultural Centre now stands as an important cultural home for the Larrakia people, inspiring other cultural centres to be built around the world.
