About the Walsh Street House Museum

The Robin Boyd Foundation is the custodian of Boyd House II, locally known as Walsh Street designed by celebrated Australian modernist architect, author, and public educator Robin Boyd as his family home in 1957. The residence serves a dual purpose: as a house museum preserving an important artefact of Australian architectural history, and as a living venue for exhibitions, education and events that celebrate the breadth of Boyd’s work and legacy.

Alongside the care and conservation of the property, the Foundation maintains the Walsh Street Archive, a substantial collection of over 4,000 items.

The Challenge

The Foundation required additional lighting in the dining room, a multifunctional space regularly used for events, guided tours, and private functions. The challenge, as Walsh Street is a heritage-listed, highly protected residence, meaning no permanent modifications could be made to the building’s fabric or structure.

Any solution needed to sit within the original wooden beam structure without being fixed in place; a quality and design focused, lighting system that was freestanding, fully relocatable, and entirely adjustable.

The Solution

The result is a bespoke, track lighting system built around the Ljusdesign Gizmo luminaires on Pico Trac, mounted onto a custom-fabricated aluminium channel. The system rests within the existing beam structure without any permanent fixing, allowing it to be repositioned freely throughout the space as required by the foundation and volunteers.

Each luminaire offers individual dimming control and interchangeable lenses, providing a flexible, exhibition-grade lighting solution that can adapt to the changing demands of the room.
